Deo hopeful as a Green Archer

Time Out

FORMER Holy Child College of Davao (HCCD) Red Eagles standout Deo Cuajao has now become a De La Salle University Green Archer after his one-year stint with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers.

Although he said he and some of his teammates who also left the team wanted to stay with UST, they were left with no choice as time was running out and UST has yet to announce its decision for the squad.

As we all know, all sports activities, particularly tournaments and different kinds of leagues, were suspended due to the community quarantine protocols amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) global pandemic. Hence, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) games were also suspended. Leaving all teams in a wait and see mode, just like UST.

Deo, in our Facebook Messenger chat yesterday, said: "Nihawa naman gud tanang teammates nako ang mga nabilin kay katong mga gamay nalang ang playing years (All my other teammates already left and those who stayed were the ones with shorter playing years)."

He, however, said he waited for quite some time and he decided to accept DLSU's offer just last week.

What also helped him finalize his move was the talk he had with DLSU alumnus lawyer Mans Carpio, the husband of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. He felt secure with his decision after receiving advice from lawyer Mans who is himself an avid basketball fan and who is also into running.

That is understandable. Such a bold move that would either make or break his basketball career would need a lot of careful thinking. Wise pieces of advice from people who could be trusted are essential.

Deo felt good and is happy about his choice and he is confident about the future of his current team.

"Ga-expect ko sa kusog na team ug mo-compete mig championship (I expect in the strength of our team and we will compete in the championship)," he added.

Now there is another reason for Dabawenyos to be rooting more for DLSU in the UAAP when it resumes action. Aside from Dabawenyo Francisco Gabriel Escandor, Deo will also don the Green Archers uniform. That makes it a double delight for us to see in UAAP cagefest.

Congrats, Deo!
