THE two Filipino survivors in a maritime tragedy in Japan are set to return home Saturday, September 19, 2020.
In a statement, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said Chief Officer Eduardo Sareno and A/B Jay-nel Rosales are expected to arrive in Manila at 5 p.m. Saturday via Philippine Airlines PR 427 from Japan.
Sareno and Rosales were among the crew of M/V Gulf Livestock 1, which capsized in Japan waters during a typhoon.
Sareno was rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard on September 3 while Rosales was rescued on September 6.
Both were confined at the Kagoshima-ken Kenritsu Ooshima Hospital and were later transferred to the Hotel New Amami while waiting for their repatriation to the Philippines.
The Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Osaka said they provided the two survivors with clothing and toiletries as well as US$200 for their needs.
The ship was carrying about 5,800 heads of cattle and 43 crew members when it capsized. The crew was composed of 39 Filipinos, two Australians, and two New Zealanders.
