Nearly 300 BuCor inmates infected with coronavirus

A TOTAL of 292 persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) were infected with Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

Of the 292, 192 are in the NBP, the largest BuCor-supervised facility in the country.

Twenty-three PDLs at the NBP had died while 168 recovered. Three others died in other facilities.

The Bucor said 159 of its personnel in the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farms and San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm also tested positive for the virus.

Except those in Iwahig, the patients have recovered.

There were only 30 remaining active cases among inmates and BuCor personnel.

At the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong, 100 Covid-19 cases were recorded. Three died and 83 recovered.

Only the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte remains free from the disease among the BuCor facilites.
