Covid-19 deaths exceed 5,000

DEATHS from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) surpassed 5,000 on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, as the Department of Health (DOH) reported an additional 50 mortalities.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the death toll from Covid-19 in the country reached 5,049.

Of the 50 newly confirmed deaths, 38 occurred in September, eight in August, three in July and one in April.

The mortalities were from the National Capital Region (20), Western Visayas (10), Calabarzon (8), Central Luzon (4), Zamboanga Peninsula (3), Cordillera (2), Bicol (1), Central Visayas (1), and Bangsamoro (1).

The DOH case bulletin also showed 1,635 new infections, 1,435 of which occurred in the last two weeks from September 9 to September 22.

The new cases came from NCR with 583, Cavite with 102, Iloilo with 97, Rizal with 67, and Cebu with 57.

The total number of coronavirus infections in the country increased to 291,789 as of Tuesday. Of this number, 56,097 were active cases.

Among the active cases, patients in critical and severe condition constituted 3.1 percent and 1.3 percent while mild cases comprised the majority at 86.4 percent and asymptomatic cases accounted for 9.2 percent.

DOH also reported 250 more recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 230,643.

Thirty-four duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 21 were recovered cases.

Two cases reported as recoveries were found to be negative and were removed from the total case count after final validation.

Meanwhile, 17 cases previously reported as recovered were reclassified as one death and 16 active cases. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
