Cebu City implements 1st phase of bicycle lane

THE Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) has started painting bike lanes on identified roads.

City Attorney Rey Gealon, the mayor’s spokesperson, said they conducted a scientific and systematic study so that the bike lanes would be accessible and that these would encompass the whole city.

After identifying bike lane routes, the Cebu City Planning and Development Office announced that these would be implemented in five phases.

The first phase will be established in core routes: Barangay Labangon, Sitio Banawa in Barangay Guadalupe, Fuente Osmeña Circle, Gen. Maxilom Ave., Cebu Business Park, Barangay Mabolo, New Imus Road, M.J. Cuenco Ave. and Barangay Sto. Niño.

The bicycle lanes will then branch out to Barangay Lahug (second phase), Barangay Talamban (third phase) and N. Bacalso Ave. (fourth phase).

The last phase will be the lane leading to the South Road Properties.

Aside from painting bike lanes, the CCTO is also painting pedestrian lanes, Gealon said.

Funds for these purposes are already included in the CCTO’s budget, he said.

SunStar Cebu asked the CCTO for details, but to no avail.

Mayor Edgardo Labella first announced the establishment of bike lanes last June after he observed that many members of the public were using bikes to and from their workplaces or to buy necessities.

Operation of public transportation was suspended at the end of March when the city was placed on enhanced community quarantine to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019.(JJL)
