Man hacked to death by own brother in Carigara

A 32-YEAR-OLD man was hacked to death by his older brother in Carigara, Leyte on Friday, September 25, 2020.

Police identified the victim as Jessie Bactol, single, farmer, and a resident of Barangay Lower Hiraan, some five kilometers away from Carigara town proper.

The suspect, 37-year-old Efren Bactol, voluntarily surrendered to the police after killing his younger brother around 1 a.m. Friday.

Initial investigation revealed the suspect, believed to be under the influence of intoxicating liquor, went to the house of the victim and had a heated argument with his younger brother.

Their father, Anselmo, tried to pacify them, but the suspect drew a long-bladed weapon or “sundang” and hacked the victim, hitting the left side of his neck.

The suspect immediately fled from the scene after the incident, according to the police.

Responding unit from Carigara Municipal Police Station, led by Master Sergeant Randy Cañamaque, recovered two bladed weapons from the scene.

Authorities are looking into “personal grudge and drunkenness” as motive in the killing.

In a report, police also identified the father as another suspect.

A post mortem examination was requested by the Rural Health Unit of Carigara.
