Hospital in Oro to file cyber libel vs netizen

MARIA Reyna-Xavier University Hospital (MRXUH) is now preparing to file a criminal complaint for cyber libel against the owner of the Facebook account name "Rj Morill" after the latter, in his social media, accused the hospital of using the pandemic to earn more money from its patients.

In his now deleted post, Rj Morill stated that their bill for a single day in Maria Reyna Hospital amounted to P300,000.

Rj Morill's post was reposted on CdeO News on September 25 and has garnered comments from several netizens.

Maria Reyna Hospital, on September 26, issued an official statement posted on their Facebook page saying that the publicized statements of Rj Morill are "absolutely false, downright malicious and libelous."

The hospital clarified that Rj Morill's mother stayed in the hospital for her dialysis and treatment of her stage 4 cancer for 46 days after she was admitted on July 31, 2020 and remained there until September 16, 2020.

It added that the total unpaid bill for the said period is only P166,982.09. Rj Morill's mother also tested positive for Covid-19 and was immediately transferred to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) where she died.

Maria Reyna Hospital stated that the for his "false and derogatory" statements on Facebook, they are preparing to file a criminal complaint for cyber libel under section 4 of Republic Act 10175, otherwise known as "Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012," in relation to Article 355 of the Revised Penal Code, which is punishable by imprisonment of six years and one day to eight years, to eight years and one day to 10 years.

Following the posting of the hospital's official statement, Rj Morill, on September 26, has also taken to posting on social media his public apology towards Maria Reyna Hospital, saying that the P300,000 bill was in the hospital where the his mother was transferred.

He also expressed his gratitude to the nurses and staff of the hospital who took care of his mother.
