GABAY BAHAY: AN ONLINE PARENTING SERIES

PART of this series entitled “Gabay Bahay: An Online Parenting Series,” presented by guest speaker, lawyer Irish Salandanan-Almeida, is to help parents guide their children in safely navigating and responsibly using the internet.

To monitor your child’s use of the internet and provide proper guidance especially during increased online exposure during this pandemic, helpful advice was shared for responsible use of technology:

- Ask your child/children not to post or share personal information publicly or with strangers, as those with ill intentions could easily take advantage of this.

- Make it a point to read the privacy policies and terms and conditions of the website and applications that your child/children use.

- Set the privacy settings with them, for this way, you will have some control over who can see their posts and who can contact them.

- Remind your child to not chat with people they don’t know and report them to you or their teachers immediately.

- Educate them about the harmful effects of clicking on links or downloading files from unknown sources, for these could be viruses in disguise and may be used to steal personal information, which hackers can use to take advantage of.

- Ask your child/children to never give out their username or password to anyone except their parents.

In the event of a violation of their children’s data privacy rights, parents may file a complaint with the National Privacy Commission at complaints@privacy.gov.ph.
