Mendoza: Hope in education amidst pandemic

WHILE trying to look for a subject to write for my regular column in Sunstar Davao, I came across an article written in the official website of DepEd, https://www.deped.gov.ph about the CVIF-DLP so I immediately went to their website and read about it. The institution has been existing quite a number of years ago but its relevance and significance have been again highlighted in times of pandemic.

A lot of videos on how the CVIF-DLP transformed not only formal education but other concerns in inclusive education are found in their website, https://dlp.ph/. Written testimonies from renowned educators and stakeholders detailing their positive feedback about it, populate the website. Allow me to share a short description of CVIF-DLP taken from their website.

The Central Visayan Institute Foundation – Dynamic Learning Program (CVIF-DLP) is a 21st century innovative teaching method that is compliant with the Department of Education’s K-12 curriculum, develops independent student learners, and improves their academic performance especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

This disaster-resilient and low-cost teaching pedagogy was developed by world-renown theoretical physicists Dr. Christopher Bernido and Dr. Ma Victoria Carpio-Bernido who, in 2010, were conferred the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for their work on the CVIF-DLP.

First implemented in 2002 at the Bernidos’ school in Bohol – the Central Visayan Institute Foundation or CVIF – the CVIF-DLP is now being implemented by more than a hundred public and private schools and even Alternative Learning System (ALS) centers nationwide.

A synthesis of classical and modern pedagogical theories, the CVIF-DLP has four key components: Parallel Classes Learning Scheme that fosters independent student learning; Activity-based Multi-Domain Learning composed of Daily Learning Activities that develop the highest level of learning; In-School Comprehensive Student Portfolio that compiles the student’s body of work, and; Strategic Study and Rest Periods that promote a zero-homework policy and four academic days

Learning communities that are implementing the CVIF-DLP have shown improvement in their students’ performance in standardized tests, have increased the number of their graduating students passing university entrance exams, have improved students’ attendance, and have improved overall behavior of their students.

It is also noteworthy to note that CVIF-DLP is supported by PLDT-Smart Foundation.
