Man swept away by flood dies; teenager still missing

A 59-YEAR-OLD man, who was swept away by flash floods in a river in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City on Tuesday, September 29, was found dead along the coastline of Calong-Calong, Zone-4, Barangay Singcang-Airport, Wednesday morning.

The fatality was identified as Rico Mirasol, 59, of Purok Kahirup, Barangay Mansilingan.

Executive Assistant Jose Maria Vargas, cluster head for Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO), said the dead body of the victim was found by a fisherman along the coastline off Barangay Singcang-Airport around 7:10 a.m.

The victim was found with a lacerated wound on his head.

Vargas said Mirasol was fishing in the river around 1 p.m. when a strong current of water swept him away.

Aside from Mirasol, he said a 19-year-old teenager was also swept away by floodwaters in a river in Barangay Vista Alegre Tuesday afternoon. Authorities are still conducting search and retrieval operations.

Vargas said due to heavy rains on Tuesday afternoon, several residents near the river banks were evacuated. The waters rose because of flash floods from the mountains.

The identified affected barangays include Barangays Mansilingan, Taculing, Alijis and Barangay 40.

Vargas said several residents in Barangays Singcang-Airport and Taculing were evacuated. They temporarily stayed in the barangay's gymnasium.

He said two persons were also rescued along Barangay Taculing when they were trapped inside their house.

The floods subsided around 5 p.m. and some of the affected residents returned to their respective homes.

Vargas said the barangay officials also assisted their affected constituents.
