Remains of Indonesian kidnap victim recovered in Sulu

THE military has recovered the remains of an Indonesian national who was abducted by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Sulu.

Lieutenant Colonel Ruben Guinolbay, commanding officer of the 45th Infantry Battalion, said the cadaver was recovered on Tuesday afternoon, September 29, 2020, in Barangay Maligay in Patikul while the troops were pursuing fleeing members of the terrorist group.

“Based on facial recognition, our intelligence officer identified the kidnap victim as one of the five Indonesian kidnap victims. However, name is being withheld for further confirmation,” said Brigadier General William Gonzales, JTF Sulu commander.

"His remains will be transported to Zamboanga City for further confirmation,” Gonzales said.

Major General Corleto Vinluan Jr., Western Mindanao Command chief, said the kidnap victim may have been shot while trying to escape during the encounter between the military troops and the terrorists.

The troops were conducting hot pursuit operations against the ASG in Patikul.

The Patikul Municipal Government earlier declared the ASG as persona non grata.

The declaration was made following the twin suicide bombing in Jolo on August 24 which killed 15 people, mostly military personnel, and wounded 74 others. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
