92 police trainees in Baguio City positive for coronavirus

SOME 92 police trainees and training officers deployed in Baguio City have tested positive for Sars-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Baguio City Police Chief Rae Allen Co said Thursday, October 1, 2020, that these policemen were sent to Baguio City in March for their six-month field training before their graduation.

“Isa pong nakakalungkot ay ito ‘yung mga kasama natin mismo noong pagsisimula ng pandemya. Pa-graduate na sila supposedly kahapon o ngayon,” he said in a radio interview.

“Most probably nakuha po nila sa pagdu-duty po sa lockdown areas. Sa dami po nila medyo di maiwasan na sila ay nagkakabanggaan,” he added.

The Baguio City local government said this caused a spike in Covid-19 cases in the city.

Those found positive were immediately sent to quarantine facilities to avoid the further spread of the virus.

Baguio City had 373 active cases on September 28, almost three times the 127 active cases on September 18.

The spike was recorded a few days ahead of the opening of the city to tourists from Ilocos region. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
