ALTHOUGH Cebuano big man Sonny Thoss isn’t playing with the Alaska Aces in the upcoming restart of the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Clark Freezone in Pampanga, he emphasizes that he has not officially retired.

In comments made during The Link podcast, the 6-foot-7 big man, whose mother hails from Cebu, clarified that he is merely “sitting out” the upcoming tournament.

“Not yet but I guess, I’m sitting out. But not officially retiring,” said Thoss who was drafted by Alaska way back in 2004 and has had quite a decorated professional career with three titles and a Finals Most Valuable Player trophy.

The veteran center explained that he elected to stay away from the PBA “bubble” to spend more time with his family during the pandemic.

“Actually, I haven’t announced my retirement. I’ve just chosen not to join this coming conference because I wanted to be more with my family during these times. But I mentioned to Alaska that if the vaccine was to come out and they will still be interested, I would be willing to play that one conference,” said Thoss.

Before the PBA season was halted back in March, he initially had an agreement with Alaska to play one more conference and is committed to honoring that if and when a vaccine is made available.

“Prior to the pandemic, I had an agreement with them that I would play for another conference but because of what happened with the pandemic, everything was put on hold,” added Thoss.
