IF YOU’VE checked the English Premier League table lately, yes, you’re not imagining things.
Having won all of its three matches, Leicester City FC now sits on top with nine points, ahead of Liverpool and Everton on goal difference.
True, it’s too early in the season to consider Leicester City’s real chances at winning the title.
In an ultra-competitive league, the club could sputter along the way and lose momentum.
On the other hand, what makes the Prem the world’s most exciting domestic league plays to Leicester’s advantage.
With this many traditional title contenders gunning for the trophy, once in a while a talented “outsider” like Leicester City gets a fair crack at winning.
And that’s exactly what the club did in the 2015-2016 season: do the unthinkable and win the Premiership.
No one could have imagined a club that spent much of its time in the second-tier Championship League would win the title in only two seasons following top flight promotion.
With that feat, the team nicknamed The Foxes earned another monicker: The Unbelievables.
Of course, many pundits would consider Leicester’s run an anomaly, and they might be right, as the club had a so-so run in the next three seasons, finishing in mid-table.
Last season, though, a revitalized Leicester City led by manager Brendan Rogers almost made it to the top four, missing a Champions League slot with “just” a fifth-place finish.
And yet that should have served as a warning to all pretenders to the throne.
Leicester started the 2020-21 season with a 3-0 away win against West Brom, followed by a 4-2 disposal of Burnley at home.
But what got everyone’s attention was its 5-2 thrashing of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, the first time the club conceded five goals at home in nearly two decades.
In the match held last Sunday, Sept. 27, lightning-quick 33-year-old Jamie Vardy scored a hat trick, bringing his total to five goals this season, almost half of Leicester’s 12.
Truly impressive.
