THE anti-terrorism bill being pushed by the government is luring in reactions on social media. It garnered rampant reaction from the public in which others say it is against the constitutional right of a Filipino to express his thoughts and opinions about the government.
Others have expressed their support for the proposed law to promote peace and development in the country. But in my opinion, we have nothing to fear in case the proposed law will be enacted because it will serve as our mechanism to protect the right of every Filipino to live in peace.
Shedding light about this proposed law, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said it aims to preserve sovereignty, promote peace and ensure the security of the people. He added that when the anti-terrorism bill becomes a law, the government’s campaign for peace and development will be more effective. Also, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque explained that President Duterte would thoroughly review the anti-terrorism bill to ensure it complies with the 1987 Constitution. He further said the President would make sure that it did not interfere with the right to free speech because every Filipino is free to express his or her thoughts if it will not result in harm or violence.
We, Filipinos, have the right to live in a free society. A society free from bombings of terror, violence and armed revolution. Should we not desire and choose to stand for the peace and development of the people not only for the present but for future generations?
We are given the right to express our thoughts but it is good that we assess ourselves. Are we responsible enough to exercise this right? Because advocates of true freedom do not incite and spread hatred. They spread peace and goodwill. They save innocent lives and protect their nation.
Amid this issue, let us understand that this proposed law is not a life-threatening gun but a defense against violence and chaos.
