New Netflix releases to look forward to this month

ADMIT it, you turn to Netflix when it’s time to put your feet up after an exhausting work day or week. With the new month comes new movies and show titles on everyone’s favorite streaming app. There are plenty more, but we purposely picked one for every week, and with varying genres.

“Emily in Paris” (Oct. 2)

The latest from “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, this series follows an ambitious 20-something marketing executive from Chicago who lands her dream job in a marketing firm in Paris. Intoxicating adventures await her in the City of Love as she tries to win colleagues over, make friends and deal with a blossoming romance. Watch it for the plot; stay for Lily Collins’ très chic outfits.

“The Haunting of Bly Manor” (Oct. 9)

The follow-up to “The Haunting of Hill House,” this supernatural horror drama series is loosely based on the 1898 horror novella, Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.” It tells the story of a young American nanny who moves to Bly Manor to take care of two orphaned children. She begins to see apparitions that would haunt her and the estate throughout her stay. Although the creative team and some of the cast of Hill House return for Bly Manor, the latter’s narrative is not connected to the former’s.

“The Trial of Chicago 7” (Oct. 16)

Based on true-to-life events that transpired in the U.S. in 1969, this film follows Chicago 7, a group of Anti-Vietnam War protesters who get into a violent clash with the police. They are charged with conspiracy to incite a riot at the 1968 democratic convention in Chicago. The trial that follows remains to be one of the most notorious in history. This real-life legal drama may have happened in the ‘60s but its present-day implications are hard to miss.

Rebecca (Oct. 21)

A young woman and a handsome widower hastily decide to marry and move into the latter’s family estate called the Manderley. The new Mrs. de Winter finds herself battling the shadow of her husband’s deceased first wife Rebecca, whose legacy is kept alive by the devious housekeeper. This is a modern take on the classic gothic thriller novel by Daphne du Maurier.

Holidate (Oct. 28)

Lonely singles Sloane and Jackson who both hate the holidays, meet on one bad Christmas and agree to be each other’s plus one for every festive occasion throughout the next year. This romantic comedy which touches on having to face judgmental and meddling family members will have you looking forward to the upcoming holidays left in 2020 and dreading them, in equal measure.
