Suspect in PMA shooting dies

THE soldier who killed and injured comrade soldiers before shooting himself inside the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) died Wednesday afternoon, September 30, 2020, while undergoing treatment.

PMA Spokesperson Major Cherryl Tindog said Airman Second Class Christopher Lim passed away at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday.

“Our personnel who opened fire and shot himself had passed away at around 2:24 p.m.,” Tindog said.

Tindog said the initial probe showed Lim having problems with his mental health.

Colonel Allen Rae Co, Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) city director, said based on initial feedback from PMA, Lim was allegedly "disturbed."

On Tuesday, Lim approached the two victims and proceeded to shoot them using an M16 rifle.

The soldier identified as Air Force Staff Sergeant Joefrey Turqueza died while Staff Sergeant Vivencio Raton was injured and is recovering in the hospital.

Co said the shooting incident is “a case of misunderstanding and argument that went very wrong.”

The PMA assured all necessary support will be given to the three personnel involved in the shooting incident.

The military academy also said all cadets remain safe inside barracks.

In February, the academy imposed an institution-wide lockdown as a proactive measure against Covid-19.
