A CENTENARIAN received a centenarian award and a P100,000 cash gift from the Mandaue City Government on Oct. 5, 2020.

The award and cash gift were personally handed by Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes to Elisa Perez Cabahug, a resident of Brgy. Basak, Mandaue City who turned 100 years old in May 2020.

Cortes was accompanied by Mandaue City Councilors Cesar Cabahug and Maline Cortes-Zafra, City Social Welfare and Services head Maricel Yu and the barangay officials.

In an interview with Sunstar Cebu, Yu said that according to the law of the city and the country, those who reach the age of 100 will be given a plaque and a cash gift by the national and local governments.

However, there are required documents such as a birth certificate and a marriage contract, among others, to prove that the grantee is 100 years old.

In September, Cabahug received P100,000 from the National Government. She will receive another P100,000 from Cebu Capitol in November.

Yu said Cabahug is still healthy and active even at her age.

Cabahug jokingly said to them, “I was supposed to donate P100,000 but since I don’t have that amount, I will take the P100,000 they’re giving me.”

According to Yu, Cabahug said in her speech that she prays all of those who visited her in giving the centenarian award will also experience the life of a 100-year-old.

Yu also said Cabahug lives with her relatives as her children are in the U.S.

Cabahug told them that once the Covid-19 pandemic is over, she plans to fly abroad and be with her children.

Cabahug is not the only one who has been given a centenarian award by the city. Yu said there is also a centenarian from Brgy. Canduman who is about to receive the award next week. (KFD)
