(UPDATED) Nine persons deprived of liberty (PDL) were killed when a riot broke out between two gangs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) before dawn Friday morning, October 9, 2020, Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said.

In a radio interview, Chaclag said members of the Sputnik and Commando gangs clashed at around 2:30 a.m. in the east quadrant of the maximum security compound.

Prison guards quelled the riot at around 4 a.m.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra ordered Bucor Director Gerald Bantag to look into the matter and submit a report as soon as possible.

Chaclag said they have launched an in-depth investigation into the incident.

"Malalim ito considering na hinintay pa mag-madaling araw bago sila nag-aksyon ng ganito," he said.

He said those who took part in the riot, especially the instigators, were isolated pending the investigation. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
