THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Ramon Magsaysay, Zamboanga del Sur, has safely retrieved a Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), locally known as "Lapay" in that province, an official announced.

Rosevirico Tan, DENR regional information officer, said the Purple Heron was retrieved Thursday, October 8, at Purok 2 in Balucot village, Tambulig, Zamboanga del Sur.

Tan said that Raniel Banual, 16, caught the bird at around 7 p.m. of October 7 when the teenager happened to roam at the mountain near their residence.

Tan said the teenager took custody of the bird while his mother, Anna Banual, informed the DENR personnel through a cellular phone call about the captive wildlife.

Upon retrieval, Tan said the bird was in good condition though wounded on its left metacarpal foot.

He said the bird was brought to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center at Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, for proper care and safekeeping.

He said the bird, once fit enough and healed, will be released back into the wild.

He said this bird is listed as Least Concern (LC) in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.

Meannwhile, he said the CENRO Ramon Magsaysay personnel informed the Banual family about Republic Act 9147 also known as the “Wildlife Resource Conservation and Protection Act” emphasizing that keeping a wildlife without a proper facility and permit is illegal. (SunStar Zamboanga)
