Mandaue City to give P10K to displaced homeowners

THE Mandaue City Government will give P10,000 financial assistance to the 76 families that were displaced by fire in Sitio Latasan, Barangay Labogon and in Zone Patatas, Barangay Paknaan.

Mayor Jonas Cortes announced that the families can use the money to buy construction materials to rebuild their houses.

Homeowners will receive P10,000, while renters and sharers will receive P5,000.

He said the City still has to assess if the affected area is government property. If it is, fire survivors can return to the area, he said.

In a separate interview, Labogon Barangay Captain Amado Manatad said he will meet with the barangay council for the declaration of a “state of calamity” in the fire-stricken area.

That way the barangay can release P5,000 as financial assistance to each affected homeowner, he said. However, he did not specify the amount the barangay will give to renters.

Meanwhile, Paknaan Barangay Captain Malaquias Soco told SunStar Cebu that they will no longer declare a “state of calamity” since they are running low on their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management funds due to the pandemic.

However, he said they have made other efforts to help constituents by urging each zone of their barangay to donate clothes to the survivors.

He said they also signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd) Mandaue Division to use the Pakanaan Elementary School as an evacuation center for survivors for 15 days starting on Oct. 10.

Barangay Paknaan officials have also written a request for assistance to the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas.

Meanwhile, Nimfa Bongo, DepEd Mandaue superintendent, told SunStar Cebu that they provided another set of modules to the 15 students whose modules were burned during the fire that struck the two barangays on the night of Oct. 9.

She said the students received the modules on Sunday, Oct. 11. (KFD)
