AFTER breaching the 400 mark on October 4, 2020, active cases in Davao City hit another record after breaching the 500 mark in active coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.
Data from the Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region showed that as of October 13, Davao City logged 53 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of active cases in the city to 514.
Towards the end of September, the Covid-19 trend in Davao City for active cases has been increasing. From September 29 to October 13, Davao City recorded a total of 555 new Covid-19 cases. It recorded the highest number of cases in a single day on October 11 with 66 new cases.
On September 29, Davao City breached the 300 mark for the first time with 310 active cases.
By October 4, active cases in the city hit the 400 mark for the first time with 425 active cases.
The following day, data from the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), which is the primary Covid-19 hospital in the city, noted that its intensive care unit (ICU) and ward beds for Covid-19 patients were nearing full occupancy.
On October 5, 2020, ICU bed had an occupancy rate of 100 percent while ward beds were at 93.27 percent. The hospital has 33 ICU beds and 223 ward beds for Covid-19 patients.
Meanwhile, Davao City recorded six new deaths related to Covid-19 on Tuesday. This brings total deaths in the city to 103.
As of October 13, 2020, Davao City has now a total of 2,416 Covid-19 cases with 1,719 recoveries, 103 deaths, and 514 active cases.
Meanwhile, data from SPMC showed that it is currently treating 438 Covid-19 patients. ICU beds at SPMC is already at 90 percent occupancy with 27 of 40 beds occupied while ward beds are at 88.81 percent occupancy with 246 beds of the 277 being occupied.
Other Covid-19 patients are being housed in the different temporary treatment and monitoring facilities of the city. Others are also being admitted at the Davao Doctors Hospital Dumoy Satellite.
In a bid to control the increase of Covid-19 cases in Davao City, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio issued Executive Order 55 on October 12, reinstating the curfew and liquor ban in the city. Effective October 15, curfew will be from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The mayor said in her executive order, bringing back the curfew and liquor ban is due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in Davao City and Covid-19 beds at SPMC nearing full occupancy.
"There is a need to control to pre-empt the increase of cases due to after-work non-essential activities during the Christmas season," she said.
Meanwhile, in Davao Region, the total Covid-19 cases are now at 3,679 with 2,864 recoveries, 125 deaths, and 690 active cases.
