DOH reports lowest number of new virus cases in 3 weeks

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, reported 1,910 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, the lowest in about three weeks.

These brought the total case count in the country to 346,536, of which 46,227 were still active cases.

The new cases Wednesday were lower than the 1,990 recorded on Tuesday, but higher than the 1,635 cases on September 22.

In its 4 p.m. case bulletin Wednesday, DOH also announced 579 recoveries, increasing the total recoveries to 293,860.

There were 78 additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 6,449.

The additional mortalities included 64 in October, 10 in September, one in August, one in July and two in June.

Nearly half, or 35, were from the National Capital Region (NCR) and 12 were from Calabarzon, two of the regions that have consistently posted the highest number of new cases and mortalities in a day.

There were also seven mortalities from Central Luzon, six from Northern Mindanao, five from Western Visayas, three from Ilocos, three from Davao, two from Bangsamoro, and one each from Bicol, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and Soccsksargen.

Seventeen cases previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as deaths.

Of the 1,910 reported cases Wednesday, 1,639 (or 86 percent) occurred within the recent 14 days from October 1 to 14.

NCR reported the highest number at 624, followed by Cavite with 219, Batangas with 104, Rizal with 91 and Negros Occidental with 63.

Among the active cases, patients with mild symptoms of Covid-19 comprised 84.5 percent while asymptomatic cases made up 10.5 percent.

Patients in critical and severe condition constituted 3.3 percent and 1.6 percent of the active cases.

There were 87 duplicates that were removed from the total use count while 11 laboratories out of the 147 licensed laboratories in the country failed to submit their data to the Covid-19 Data Repository System on October 13.
