Internet cafes find opportunity in online classes

INTERNET cafes in Cebu City have temporarily converted their facilities from gaming to digital workplaces and classrooms.

Cebu’s two big internet cafe chains—Mineski Infinity Cyber Cafe Network and Voyager Internet Cafe—reopened their branches in September and October, respectively.

The Department of Trade and Industry has allowed internet cafes to resume business but they can operate at only 50 percent of their capacity and there will be no gaming allowed.

In a post on Sept. 18, 2020, Mineski said it had partially reopened some of its Cebu branches, temporarily opening from 9 a.m to 6 p.m.

“We will be implementing strict safety protocols. Please make sure to bring your own face masks and face shield, and follow the guidelines accordingly,” it said.

Mineski has three branches located in GQS Plaza, Lahug and Colon St. in Cebu City.

It assured that its branches are sanitized daily and it has

alcohol stations at the counter as well as fast internet connection for work or online classes.

Voyager, on the other hand, in a post on Sept. 15, 2020, informed of the reopening of its Sanciangko branch on Sept. 21, University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue branch on Oct. 1 and Urgello branches on Oct. 12. These cafes are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are closed on Sundays.

“Temperature check will be implemented before entering the premises and (those with) temperature above 37.6 will not be allowed to enter. No face shield, no face mask, no entry, and both should be worn at all times while inside the premises,” it said.

Voyager said it will implement a one seat apart rule for social distancing. Customers must bring their own headset as no headsets will be provided. The entire store will also be disinfected every two hours.

Recently, the University of Cebu rented internet cafes for the exclusive use of UCnians in Cebu Province.

In a Facebook post on Oct. 6, UC Chancellor Candice Gotianuy announced that UC has partnered with internet cafes, namely Geostrike in Carcar, Cyberbully in Toledo, Filns in Dalaguete, Evolve in Bogo and Lycan in Lapu-Lapu City for UC students to use during their online classes.

Gotianuy said UC will ensure that its partner internet cafes will follow safety protocols. The university is also negotiating with other cafes to cater to more students. (JOB)
