Villaflor: Finally, PFL

It’s been a while since followers of Philippine club football have seen our boys play competitively.

The last streamed matches I saw were that of Ceres-Negros (now United City FC) and Kaya-Iloilo FC in the AFC Cup last March yet.

So I welcome with open arms the start of the 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL), which kicks off on Oct. 25, Sunday, with all six participating teams seeing action at the Philippine Football Federation national training center field in Carmona, Cavite.

None of these teams, though, has played competitively in seven months due to the onset of the pandemic, and they barely have less than two months of training since practice sessions were allowed to resume.

It would then be interesting to see how form and fitness will impact the matches, and whether this would work in favor of or against the favorites.

The PFL will have its leanest and shortest season ever with United City, Maharlika FC, Stallion-Laguna, Kaya, Mendiola FC, and the Azkals Development Team playing until Nov. 6 in a bubble setting.

That’s a mere 15 single round-robin matches in a span of 12 days.

And yet I am excited to watch, hopefully, all of the fixtures that would be streamed live on the PFL Facebook page, PFL Youtube channel, 1Play Sports and EXP Cable TV channel.

So what are games lined up this Sunday?

Mendiola will go up against the ADT, which has Azkals mentor Scott Cooper as head coach, at 9 a.m.

Kaya-Iloilo will then go up against Stallion-Laguna at 4:30 p.m.

Favorites United City, captained by Azkal Stephan Schrock, will then clash with Maharlika, led by former Azkals defender Anton del Rosario at 8:30 p.m.

Let the pandemic games begin.
