Vicente: Exercising while sick?

MOST fit people feel sick when they miss out on their exercise routine.

And some have this understanding of sweating out sickness.

Is it safe to exercise even if you are not feeling well?

While exercise is beneficial to one's health, we should learn to listen to our body.

Many of us push ourselves to the limit to achieve certain levels of fitness, caution should also be observed to know when to take it easy, to know the right timing and the right body condition.

It is a common practice for many to ignore sickness, believing that exercising would help make it better.

According to Doctor Neil Schachter, medical director of respiratory care at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, "if your symptoms are above the neck, including a sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, and tearing eyes, then it's OK to exercise."

"If your symptoms are below the neck, such as coughing, body aches, fever, and fatigue, then it's time to hang up the running shoes until these symptoms subside," he adds.

Fever is one of the most common symptom to assess if a person should or should not exercise.

It can be a gauge if you will make it worse or not. If your fever reaches 101 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius, then it is an automatic indication that exercise could mean danger and it is better to skip it and just rest and relax.

Again for most fit people, they prefer exercising than resting it out.

Experts always advice to recognize your limit that if you are not feeling well, then maybe, you could tone down your exercise routine's intensity.

For example, walking instead of running, anything that would ease the rigor of your routine, maybe resorting to alternative activities like meditation or yoga.

When we feel sick and down, a rest is always the best resort.

But if it's not appealing, one should consider toning down to a low to medium intensity to make sure that the body is given time to recover.

Regard our body as a work of a machine, while it works wonders, it also needs break to recover and supplements to replenish.
