Typhoon Quinta makes 5th landfall, maintains strength

TYPHOON Quinta (Molave) made its fifth landfall over Pola, Oriental Mindoro at 3:30 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2020, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

It was expected to be the final coastal crossing of the typhoon over the Philippine landmass, Pagasa added.

The typhoon hit land at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, October 25, over San Miguel Island, Tabaco City, Albay; at 6:50 p.m. Sunday over Malinao, Albay; at 10:30 p.m. Sunday over San Andres, Quezon; and 1:20 a.m. Monday over Torrijos, Marinduque.

At 7 a.m. Monday, the eye of the typhoon was spotted in the vicinity of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, with maximum sustained winds of 125 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 180 kph.

It was still moving westward at 25 kph. It is forecast to re-intensify as it emerges over the West Philippine Sea mid-morning Monday.

Pagasa said the typhoon may reach its peak intensity within 24 to 48 hours.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains were forecast over Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Calabarzon, Aurora, Isabela, Aklan, Capiz, and Antique.

The tail-end of a frontal system will likewise bring moderate to heavy rains over Cagayan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.

These two weather systems will also bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Metro Manila, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and the rest of Luzon and Visayas.

Flooding (including flash floods) and rain-induced landslides may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.

A storm surge of 2.0 to 3.0 meters, which is on top of the regular tidal surge, may be experienced over the coastal areas of Camarines Norte, and the northern coastal areas of Quezon including Polillo Islands and Camarines Sur.

A storm surge of 1.0 to 2.0 meters was forecast over the coastal areas of Batangas, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and the remaining coastal areas of Quezon and Camarines Sur.
