THE Vivant Group has turned over newly completed science laboratories to four schools in Metro Cebu.

Vivant Energy Corp., through Vivant Foundation, completed the retrofitting of the science laboratories of Mabolo National High School in Cebu City, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School and Liloan National High School.

The company also upgraded the existing science laboratory of the Mandaue City Science High School.

Online demos

During the turnover ceremony on Oct. 9, 2020, Mabolo National High School principal Dr. Rosemarie O. Novabos said the new science laboratory will be used for online demonstrations.

“The teachers will film their demonstrations and experiments here for their online classes,” she said.

The Vivant Group funded the conversion of the old faculty room of Mabolo National High School into a science laboratory, and it donated core laboratory equipment and teaching tools.

Construction of the science laboratories were conducted during the general community quarantine period to fulfill Vivant’s commitment to turn over the facilities before the start of the school year 2020-2021.

“We decided to focus on education because it is the best way to invest in the future of any community. We saw the importance of science and technology in the modern world and this pandemic has reinforced that need to improve STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, particularly in our public schools,” Vivant Foundation executive director Shem Jose W. Garcia said.

Effective way

Dr. Danilo G. Gudelosao, assistant superintendent of the Cebu City Schools Division, said even with distance learning, teaching science in a well-equipped laboratory is still the most effective way to engage children.

“Without a physical laboratory and the core tools and equipment, science concepts will remain abstract to the learners,” said Gudelosao, who taught science before taking on an administrative role at the Department of Education.

He added that Vivant’s donation is very helpful even under the distance learning program as it provides the necessary tools to effectively teach science.

“The Department of Education is very grateful for this dedicated science laboratory, because having one creates a behavioral change among learners. They become excited to learn science,” he said.

He further said, “We commit to ensure that the laboratory and the equipment are taken care of to benefit more learners in the future.”

The new science laboratories are part of Vivant Foundation’s support for STEM education in public schools. Under the same program, Vivant also provides scholarships to qualified participants of the Department of Education 7 Regional Science and Technology Fair.
