LibREAL at 30

NOVEMBER 2020 is the 30th Libraries and Information Services (LIS) Month!

By virtue of Presidential Proclamation 837 series of 1991, the LIS month celebration focuses on highlighting the importance of libraries and information centers in our community and promoting the invaluable services that these institutions render.

For 2020, the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-National Committee on Libraries and Information Services (NCCA-NCLIS), in partnership with the Philippine Librarians Association (PLAI), and other stakeholders will spearhead the celebration with the theme: “LibREAL,” a portmanteau for the word libraries and the acronym for this year’s LIS month goals: Relate, Engage, Advocate, Lead.

With the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, the theme aims to relate the libraries’ wide range of products and services made available to the public; engage the communities and other stakeholders to generate

interest in libraries and their services; advocate the libraries’ role in attaining the sustainable development goals (SDG) established in the United Nation 2030 Agenda and integrated into our Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2017-2022; and lead a society conducive to innovation, empowerment, creativity, and intellectual freedom.

On November 4, 2020, the 30th LIS Month Virtual Opening Ceremonies, headed by the NLP, will be featured on their website and official Facebook page.

The program will include opening remarks by the NLP Executive Director, Cesar Gilbert Adriano, and a keynote speech by Christine Mackenzie, President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Salvacion Arlante, head of the NCCA-NCLIS, will deliver her message and declare the opening of the LIS Month.

Following this, various libraries and organizations across the Philippines will hold virtual activities to commemorate the 30th LIS month for the whole month of November 2020. Online activities including library related webinar series, spoken-word poetry, storytelling, and vlogging competitions, virtual library tours, online workshops, and other initiatives to engage the public will be launched and announced in a unified calendar for public information.

To cap off the celebration, the 30th LIS Month Virtual Closing Ceremony will be held on November 30, 2020. It will also be the awarding ceremony for the winners of the LIS contests initiated by the NLP, including the Digital Poster-making Contest, Share-A-Book Interactive Storytelling Contest, Vlog on Libraries, Bookface, Cutest Photo in the Library, and Best Online Activities by an LIS Association.

This 30th LIS month celebration becomes possible through the

conceptualization and funding support of NCCA and NLP, and the participation of library organizations, public libraries affiliated with NLP, schools, colleges, and universities in Metro Manila, sponsors, media partners, and other stakeholders.
