Death toll from Typhoon Quinta rises to 9

THE number of fatalities from Typhoon Quinta (Molave) has increased to nine, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

In a report, the NDRRMC said the fatalities were: a mother and her baby who drowned in Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro; a man who drowned in Mogpog Marinduque; two men and a woman who were hit by a fallen tree in El Nido in Palawan, Odiangan in Romblon, and Oriental Mindoro; and a man who drowned in Odiongan, Romblon.

Two other casualties from Central Visayas were still being verified.

The NDRRMC said six people were injured while two others remained missing.

A total of 49,557 families or 209,457 persons in 787 barangays in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Bicol, Central Visayas and Central Luzon were affected.

In Bicol, 252,944 families or 992,404 persons were affected by the weather disturbance.

A total of 1,742 passengers, 464 rolling cargoes, 27 vessels and 32 other vehicles were stranded in different ports in the affected areas.

At least 81 incidents of flooding, landslide or soil collapse, and maritime mishap were recorded due to the typhoon.

The weather disturbance has also damaged or destroyed P429.72 million worth of crops and infrastructure facilities.

Typhoon Quinta left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday morning.

State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) is monitoring a tropical depression that is approaching the eastern boundary of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the tropical depression was spotted around 1,960 kilometers east of Central Luzon and was slowly moving westward or west-northwestward.

Once inside PAR, it will be given the name “Rolly.” (SunStar Philippines)
