New virus cases top 2,000 in a day again

AFTER two consecutive days of less than 2,000 new infections per day, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,053 additional coronavirus cases on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

These brought the total case count in the Philippines to 375,180.

Of this number, 38,955 (or 10.4 percent) were active cases, 329,111 (87.7 percent) have recovered from the highly infectious coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) and 7,114 (1.9 percent) had died.

The DOH case bulletin on Wednesday reported 540 new recoveries and 61 additional deaths.

Among the new cases were 108 from Caloocan City, 103 from Quezon City, 97 from Negros Occidental, 93 from Benguet and 85 from Rizal.

A total of 24,970 tests were conducted based on reports from the diagnostics laboratories on October 27. Of the total, 1,673 (6.7 percent) were found positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Nearly 44 million people worldwide have been infected with Sars-CoV-2, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. More than 1.16 million have died. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
