'Quinta' damages livestock, crops in Negros Occidental

TYPHOON Quinta has left millions worth of damage to crops and livestock in Negros Occidental.

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) reported that the damage to livestock brought by the heavy rains generated by Typhoon Quinta was estimated at P1,051,258.

Dr. Renante Decena, PVO head, said they received reports of livestock damage in the towns of Hinoba-an, Isabela, Moises Padilla, Binalbagan, Valladolid, San Enrique, and the cities of Bago and La Carlota.

Among the damage noted were livestock from backyard farms such as free range chicken, ducks, pigs, game fowls, goats, and carabao.

Aside from livestock, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist also released a report of crop damage also caused by Quinta.

In the town of Hinoba-an, they said around 175 farmers were affected. Rice crop damage was estimated at over P3 million in the town's three villages.

Moises Padilla, meanwhile, reported agricultural damage at P2.4 million, of which the P2.2 million comes from the town's 70 hectares of rice farmland.

Sipalay City also submitted its own report on crop damage estimating losses at P1.5 million for rice, P483,000 worth of high-value crops, and P40,000 in corn.

It was also noted that some of the farmers are insured via the crop insurance program, and the agriculture office has advised them to file a "notice of loss for indemnity" claims via their municipal or city agriculturist.
