TOURNAMENT favorites United City Football Club (UCFC) and Kaya FC-Iloilo walked away with three points each on the Philippines Football League (PFL) kick-off day after beating their respective opponents last Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

UCFC, formerly known as Ceres Negros FC, showcased its experience and beat the fledgling Azkals Development Team (ADT), 1-0.

Mike Ott hit the back of the net in the 25th minute with a two-touch volley inside the box from a well-placed pass by his brother Manny Ott.

“Manu (Manny) gave me a good pass and I knew when I shot the ball that it had a good chance of going in so I am very happy,” said Mike. “Now we just play well and look forward to the next game.”

Manny made the goal possible with his pin-point accurate pass. However, UCFC will miss his playmaking for the next game after he was sent off in the 81st minute for a dangerous tackle on Simen Lyngbo.

Kaya FC-Iloilo, on the other hand, defeated league newcomer Maharlika Manila FC, 1-0, in the second match.

Jason Panhay scored a goal in the 29th minute after hitting a cross pass from the left flank inside the box.

Kaya FC-Iloilo showed its superior form and kept on attacking the whole match. However, Maharlika FC kept it close with the superb goalkeeping of Henri Bandeken and tight defensive backline of Jerry Barbaso, David Basa and Anton del Rosario.

“We have to improve in the attacking third in our succeeding matches,” said Kaya FC-Iloilo coach Yu Hoshide.

There will be three matches on Oct. 31: UCFC faces off with Mendiola FC 1991, Kaya FC-Iloilo locks horns with ADT and Maharlika Manila FC takes on Stallion Laguna FC.
