PPI cites SunStar articles in Covid chronicles

THE Philippine Press Institute (PPI) has recognized 12 stories written by SunStar Cebu editors and reporters in July and August 2020 as part of its project chronicling local communities in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project, "Covid-19 Chronicles: Sharing Stories, Caring for Communities," is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and Nickel Asia Corporation, a PPI statement on the selection said.

Pachico A. Seares, the paper's Public and Standards editor, was recognized by PPI for three articles in his "Explainer" series on the community quarantine in Cebu and the policies made by the Cebu City Government and other local government units during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Nini B. Cabaero, editor-in-chief, was recognized by PPI for her stories "Alone with Covid-19: What to do," and "Prone is key: A frontliner-patient's advocacy" which detailed her experience battling Covid-19.

Cherry Ann T. Lim, managing editor, was also cited by PPI for her special report on the increasing occurrence of sexual abuse of children during the lockdown.

Rosemarie Holganza-Borromeo, contributing editor, was recognized for her news feature "Feeding the hungry" on the efforts of the Archdiocese of Cebu's Commission on the Laity to help feed affected families in Barangay Mambaling in Cebu City.

Reporters Johanna Marie O. Bajenting, Wenilyn B. Sabalo and Kate F. Denolang were cited as well for their reportage on the pandemic.

Bajenting, Business reporter, was cited for her story "Meet, buy, pay online: Business in the new normal" which details how local businesses and budding entrepreneurs in Cebu adapted to new normal settings to earn a living during the pandemic.

Sabalo, general assignments reporter, was recognized for her special report "Distance learning in the new normal" on the Department of Education-Central Visayas' efforts to promote distance learning during the pandemic; and "Talisay school to use radio to teach students" on the work of educators in the Jaclupan National High School in Talisay City to have radio-based learning in their community.

Denolang, Mandaue City reporter, was also recognized for her story "Covid patient attribute recovery to God, family" which details how Mandaue City Councilor Joel Seno survived his month-long ordeal with Covid-19.

PPI's Covid-19 Chronicles was introduced by PPI for the purpose of collecting community stories from its member-publications in the regions under one common website, it said. (JKV)
