Villar: New roads shall include bike facilities

CLARK FREEPORT -- Public Works Secretary Mark Villar has assured that bicycle lanes and facilities will be included in new roads that will be constructed by the agency.

In his officials Facebok page, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) chief cited Department Order 88, eyeing the construction of bike lanes, walk ways and other amenities in all road projects of the national government.

"With the issuance of DPWH Department Order 88, all projects that involve new road and bridge construction shall include in its design the provision of bicycle facilities, if feasible," Villar said.

On October 21, the DPWH head rode his mountain bike and tested the newly-established bicycle lane along Tagaytay Bypass Road.

"Makikita niyo po nandito ako sa bike lane. Ito po ay magiging standard na sa DPWH sa ating mga bagong kalsada ay magkakaroon po ng idependent bike lanes," Villar said.

DPWH Department Order Number 88 states that new roads and expansion projects aimed to relieve traffic congestion shall now include a dedicated bike lane.

Officials in Clark Freeport and Mabalacat City expressed support to the campaign of the national government, including the DPWH and Department of Interior and Local Government for bicycle lanes.

Some of these officials, who are also cycling enthusiasts, include Bases Conversion and Development Authority president Vince Dizon, Mabalacat City Mayor Cris Garbo and Mabalacat Vice Mayor Geld Aquino, among others.

The Clark Development Corporation is about to finish the construction of bicycle lanes in major roads inside the Clark Freeport.
