Death toll from Typhoon Rolly climbs to 25

FIVE more persons were confirmed to have died during the onslaught of Typhoon Rolly (Goni), raising the death toll to 25 as of Wednesday, November 4, 2020, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Camilo Cascolan said.

Cascolan said 21 of the fatalities were from Bicol, three from Calabarzon Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and one from Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan).

Seven people remained missing, four in Bicol, one in Mimaropa and four in Calabarzon.

Cascolan said 43 persons sustained injuries, 39 of whom are from Bicol and four from Calabarzon.

A total of 64,677 families or 281,369 individuals remained in the evacuation centers as of Wednesday.

There were still 431 vessels and 1,290 passengers stranded in ports in Bicol and Metro Manila.

A total of 365 infrastructure facilities were damaged by “Rolly" in Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Bicol.

Some 258 areas remained flooded in Bicol, Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

The entire provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur were among the 197 areas that still have no electricity.

Cascolan said 7,807 search and rescue personnel were deployed while 16,058 more were on standby.

Over 19,000 police personnel have also been conducting law enforcement operations to maintain peace and order in the evacuation centers as well as in the affected communities.

Cascolan urged those who want to extend help to the affected families, especially in Bicol, to coordinate their relief operations with the local government unit.

Based on the records of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), however, 20 people had died while 74 others were wounded and three were missing.

The NDRRMC said a total of 532,794 families or 2.08 million individuals were affected by the typhoon in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and the National Capital Region.

Of the total, 142,475 families or 517,172 people are being assisted in evacuation centers, the NDRRMC said.

The disaster bureau said 20 roads and six bridges were still not passable in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Cordillera Administrative Region.

It estimated damage to infrastructure at P4.79 billion while nearly P2 billion worth of crops were destroyed in Bicol. (SunStar Philippines)
