THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 7 and its Clarin Freshwater Fish Farm (CFFF) in Clarin, Bohol have exceeded their target for tilapia production for 2020.

Gaymelo Lopez of CFFF said the field facility reached its annual target of producing six million tilapia fry or fingerlings by the end of September.

As of Oct. 28, Lopez said, the tilapia production had reached 7.5 million. The production number is still increasing, he said in a report posted on Bfar 7’s Facebook page.

Lopez attributed the accomplishment to the efforts of the personnel so they could meet the demands of tilapia pond owners and operators.

Candido Samijon of the Bohol Provincial Fishery Office said they have observed an increase in demand for tilapia fry or fingerlings as more people are venturing into backyard tilapia farming.

Samijon said many individuals resorted to urban gardening and tilapia farming since the Covid-19 pandemic started in Central Visayas early this year so they could grow and produce their own food.

Assistance

More tilapia was delivered to clients, including the ones from Cebu Province.

The CFFF field facility transported on Nov. 6 a total of 80,000 tilapia fry and 10,200 tilapia breeders to Cebu.

Lopez said the CFFF shared 10,000 tilapia fry to the Bfar 7 Carmen Brackishwater Fish Farm in Carmen, Cebu. Fish farmers who had requested for assistance were the recipients.

He said the CFFF initially gave 50,000 fry to the Bfar 7 Cebu Provincial Fishery Office, which requested 100,000 fry. These will also be distributed to the identified beneficiaries in the province.

The CFFF also assisted a private fishpond owner in Barili, Cebu who purchased about 20,000 tilapia fry for the pond’s grow-out culture and 2,000 tilapia breeders for its hatchery.

Lopez said the owner plans to establish a tilapia hatchery that will produce its own fry. This way, it can help the Bfar 7 in catering to other operators in nearby towns that want to set up a tilapia grow-out culture.

Lopez said the CFFF has also been helping the Bfar 7 Lake Danao Freshwater Fish Farm in San Francisco, Camotes Islands by providing about 8,200 tilapia breeders that will replace those that did not survive the dry months.
