Tan: QR code

Tan: QR code

ADMITTEDLY, part of the many adjustments we all need to go through is the implementation of the QR code. This one got a lot of mixed interpretations and have spurned various fears from both secular and religious sector. Most particularly among the circles of many evangelical churches linking the implementation of the QR Code to the biblical prophecy of the marking of the beast (the mark of the anti-Christ). I am prayerful that somehow this article will contribute to the atmosphere of cooperation instead of coercion, dialogue instead of more demands, and open-mindedness especially in this time of Covid captivity.

What is really the contention of fear here is that privacy will be compromised or can be used by others for their personal gain. I think this is a valid concern since privacy and freedom are bedrock values of democracy. Perhaps a little modification from our policymakers will help achieve the purpose of the QR Code (Tracing) and protect people from abusers. Concrete efforts to protect people's privacy is better than a disclaimer. Compliance from subordinates demands compassion and consistency from the policymakers. However, in times of emergencies like this, we must learn to "sacrifice" some conveniences of our privacy and freedom for the benefit of many. For the part of our local government adding more rules will really invite more violations. It is my observation that the integrity of the rules or EO's lies in the fairness and aptness of its implementation.

When previous EO's are not implemented seriously the coming EOs believe me will not have its effect. There is wisdom in the saying rules may create fear and compliance it is in authentic relationship with others that create a spark of hope of transformation. Meaning it is still wise to have some kind of dialogue before a drastic change.

Frankly, let us brace ourselves for more EOs because Covid-19 is an unrelenting adversary. For the part of the local government, consistency will strengthen your rules, and for the part of all who are living here in Davao, compliance is the best option. As a minister of the gospel, I am appealing to the evangelical circles to humbly comply and not be in combative mode. QR Code is not the sign of the beast, it may have a resemblance to how it is described in the bible, but this is not yet it!

Besides, the second coming of Christ must not be met with panic, our panic led attitude is more deadly than the pandemic itself. The coming of Christ must be met with holy excitement especially for those who are waiting for it. It must call us to repentance and not religious paranoia by spreading extreme interpretation of the scripture. The second coming of Christ calls for depth of spiritual preparation, hope, and celebration. When Christ shall come, we no longer need a QR Code. In the meantime, let us prayerfully comply. And for our local authorities govern the people who put you in office with consistency and compassion. We still have time to do the next right thing. Figure it out and be a part of the solution that the majority may benefit from. One thing I am learning from this Covid captivity is we are a community!
