Duterte attends virtual Asean Summit

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will participate in the 37th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit and Related Summits along with other heads of state through a virtual conference from November 12 to 15, 2020.

This year’s annual summit will be chaired by Viet Nam with the theme “Cohesive and Responsive Asean.”

In a statement, Malacañang said President Duterte is expected to exchange views with his counterparts on the region on matters related to the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) response and recovery efforts, future direction of Asean community building, and regional and international developments.

The President will likewise “advance Philippine positions on public health emergencies cooperation, regional economic integration, migrant workers’ rights, climate change, disaster risk reduction management, counter-terrorism, and the South China Sea issue.”

More than 10 outcome documents are expected to be adopted during the four-day summit in relation to Asean cooperation on Covid-19, enhancing preparedness for public health emergencies, and updates on Asean community building efforts, among others.

The President will be joined by key Cabinet officials, including the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, and Social Welfare and Development during the summit.

This is the third virtual summit to be attended by the President together with his fellow Asean leaders this year. The first was the Special Asean Summit on Covid-19 held last April and the second was the 36th Asean Summit, also hosted by Viet Nam last June. (PR)
