Lawyer shot dead in Palawan

A LAWYER was shot dead by unidentified men on Tuesday morning, November 17, in Narra in Palawan.

Police identified the victim as lawyer Eric Jay Aston Magcamit.

Magcamit was gunned down around 6:55 a.m. while traversing the National Highway in Barangay Malinao on board his vehicle.

“He was flagged down by two unidentified suspects and (was asked to go) down [his] his vehicle and fired upon towards the victim that resulted in his instantaneous death,” the police said.

The assailants fled. Investigation is ongoing.

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) condemned the killing, which was done in broad daylight.

“It is our consistent stand that violence has no place in this civilized society, especially against those in the legal profession who are courageously helping in the administration of justice. This tragic incident is not only an attack to a member of the IBP but also an attack to the legal order and justice system by means of fear and violence. The perpetrators must be swiftly brought into the hands of the law by those in authority,” it said in a statement.

“We honor the life and memories of our brother through his great contribution not only in the IBP but to the society as well. His senseless death is a great loss to the community he had perseveringly served since his admission to the bar, and most especially to us, his brethren in the legal profession. His dedication and commitment to uphold the ends of justice has illuminated until his last breath. We deeply mourn for the loss of a brother,” it added. (SunStar Philippines)
