THE Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has welcomed the city government’s move to waive the payment of interests, penalties and surcharges on the payment of business and real property taxes in the city.

The local government passed City Ordinance 15-2020-1579 waiving the payment of interests, penalties and surcharges for the period of June 25, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2020.

“This ordinance is a big help in restoring business confidence in the Mandaue business community ravaged by the pandemic. It will inspire the business community to rise up and build back better because we know that we have a big brother in the local government looking after us,” MCCI president Steven Yu said.

Interests, penalties and surcharges accrued before June 25, 2020 are not covered by the ordinance, which was approved on Nov. 9, 2020.

Yu thanked Mayor Jonas Cortes, the Mandaue City Council, as well as City Treasurer Regal Oliva for granting their waiver request.

“Thank you for helping businesses in Mandaue City through this ordinance. Mandaue City LGU (local government unit) has always been very responsive and very supportive to the business community of Mandaue City. It is truly one of the most business-friendly LGUs in the country,” he said.

With businesses in the country struggling with losses and high operational costs amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Yu said the new ordinance will give them relief.

“Due to restrictions in mobility at the height of the lockdown, many businesses incur penalties and surcharges, and this ordinance is a big relief to them. It will give them the additional funding to rebuild their businesses instead of closing them,” he said.

Mandaue City has more than 15,000 licensed business establishments and recently introduced its online business permit and licensing system to make it easier for enterprises to connect with the city regarding permits especially during the pandemic.
