Tell it to SunStar: Lessons from disasters

NATURE is a harsh teacher. Sometimes, it teaches mankind a lesson the hard way. The recent storms that struck the country had taught us moral lessons that for years we had taken for granted. Some of these were even fundamental issues and old subject matter explained way back in grade school.

1. Stop the illegal logging activity. The reckless and irresponsible cutting of trees without reforestation has a damaging effect on the environment. One contributing factor to the Camarines Sur flooding incident was denuded forest and mountains.

2. Enforce the tree planting program. Local government must lead the rehabilitation of the flood-prone areas by planting more trees on river banks and mountains instead of building more commercial structures and subdivisions.

3. Stop mining and quarrying activities. Several landslide incidents were attributed to mining and quarrying operations. Such as the Naga, Cebu, and Ifugao tragedies caused by heavy rainfall and quarrying operations in the area.

4. Improve urban planning. City planners should adopt and implement measures to guarantee the safety and sustainable urban development program. This includes the LGUs’ mandate to develop a comprehensive and responsive disaster plan.

5. Educate people about climate change. The world has changed over time. People should be aware of the impact of climate change on the environment and how to deal with it.

The devastation caused by the typhoon are beyond our control but its domino-effect can be minimized with enough preparation and proper disaster response. Calamities brought about by nature whether we like it or not are a constant reminder of our responsibility to take good care and protect our environment. If people will continue to ignore and disregard their responsibility then many will continue to suffer the consequences of their actions.
