THE City of Love glitters amid the gloom this holiday season, thanks to the generosity of benefactors and the business community.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed his gratitude to the private sector for giving cheers to the Ilonggos this Christmas despite the crisis due to coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“We are very thankful for the support of our partners since day one. On this time of thanksgiving, these lanterns light up the mood in the midst of challenges as we move to heal and recover as one,” Treñas said.

Some 600 six-foot star lanterns adorn streetlights on the stretch of Diversion Road in Mandurriao, and General Luna and Calle Real in City Proper.

This has been made possible through the initiative dubbed as "Ilonggo Christmas Parol of Hope 2.0: Giving Light to Lives," following its successful undertaking in 2019.

City Hall collaborated for the project chaired by Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Iloilo Chairman Dr. Sandra S. Gomez with PCCI Iloilo President lawyer Jobert Peñaflorida, Treasurer Maritess Lim, Auditor Alma May Tayo, Board Member Vincent Abellar and PCCI Iloilo Secretary Yen de Felipe.

District plazas have been decorated by Abanilla family in Arevalo; Biscocho House in Jaro; Global Business Power in La Paz; Gurrea Construction in Mandurriao; Layson family in Molo; and Iloilo Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Plaza Libertad.

Malls have also transformed their establishments into colorful attractions.

PCCI Iloilo brought back parols that are also eco-friendly through reuse, recycle and refurbish, to at least brighten what used to be a festive Yuletide celebration.

"Receiving accolades last year, the parols once again bring back the spirit of joy, happiness, love and hope for all Ilonggos. More importantly, as Christmas is the time for sharing and giving, these lanterns are shining examples," PCCI Iloilo said.

"Bearing the national colors of our flag, the parols symbolize the call for patriotism and unity during these challenging times. The persons deprived of liberty at Bureau of Jail Management and Penology were given livelihood at this crucial time," it added.

"Our donors and friends have been able to enlighten the lives of fellow Ilonggos, especially those affected by the pandemic, as the collective donations will be used to raise funds for Christmas gifts for frontliners who are modern-day heroes," PCCI Iloilo said.

"Let us continue to be beacons of unity and hope. May the spirit of Christmas be always in our hearts," it added. (PR)
