Laurente faces Portes on Nov. 28

FORMER amateur standout Criztian Pitt Laurente will be busy against Renan Portes in an eight-round fight on Nov. 28 at the Bawing Gym in General Santos City.

“It will be just one bout, an activity fight for him,” GerryPens Promotions owner Gerry Peñaolsa, who promotes Laurente, told SunStar Cebu.

Laurente is a very promising 20-year-old prospect. He’s a bronze medalist in the 2018 AIBA Youth World Championships and was hailed as the best junior boxer in Asia in 2016 by the Asian Boxing Confederation. Laurente turned pro in 2019 with a first round technical knockout of Rey John Indita. He beat Rogelio Boyles, Christian Gabayeron and Jasper Cayno in that same year.

Laurente last fought in Cebu City right before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. He outclassed former ALA boxer Boyce Sultan by unanimous decision on Feb. 8 at the Brgy. Apas Sports Complex in what should have been his stiffest test.

Laurente will be up against another experienced fighter in Portes.

The 28-year-old Portes, a 10-year veteran, is on a slump. He lost his last eight contests since 2018. He last saw action on Dec. 15, 2019 with a first round knockout defeat to Mark Bernaldez. He has fought the likes of unbeaten Nicaraguan prospect Melo Lopez, world-rated Mike Plania, undefeated Japanese Hayate Kaji and veteran Thai Mike Tawatchai.

Laurente is 5-0 with three knockouts, while Portes is 10-13 with six knockouts. / Eka
