THIS pandemic has thrown all the sports calendars in disarray, including the NBA. We have just witnessed the NBA Finals and the now, the NBA Draft and free agency since the 2020-2021 season starts by December 22, 2020.
At the start of the free agency, teams scrambled in getting coveted players to beef up their rosters. Even the defending champions, the Lakers, made critical additions to their roster.
Free agency winner: Los Angeles Lakers
Key additions: Dennis Schroeder, Montrezl Harrel, Wesley Matthews, Marc Gasol
While losing critical members of the champions team, these additions are upgrades even if their contributions remain yet to be seen. The Lakers are still waiting on Anthony Davis, and once he signs the dotted line, the purple and gold will be a team to reckon with for the coming season.
Second best: Atlanta Hawks
Key additions: Danilo Gallinari, Razon Rondo, Kris Dunn, Bogdan Bogdanovic
Trae Young gets a chance to learn from Rondo, and with these other vital additions, scoring chores get distributed. It makes the team exciting and might make the playoffs this season.
Special Mention: Los Angeles Clippers
With the failed 2019-2020 season, the Clippers were up for a revamp. The team made a coaching change and have just signed Serge Ibaka. Reuniting Kawhi Leonard with Ibaka is probably the missing mix for surviving in the West's cutthroat.
Some teams missed out and lost key players to free agency.
Lost big: Denver Nuggets
After making the Western Conference finals, they lost Jerami Grant to the Pistons. He was a key rotation for the Nuggets in the recent playoffs. He was a substantial contributor to the team, and now, he brings his talents and experience to the Pistons.
The NBA free agency has never been this exciting in recent memory. The rosters look like something taken out from playing several seasons in NBA 2K. Players are looking for better opportunities to showcase their talents while getting the best contracts. There are also teams looking to upgrade and get over the hump and, and indeed, teams looking to contend for the Larry O'Brien trophy.
These movements only make the NBA more exciting and worth watching in the light of this pandemic. We all could use a little something to cheer us up while being quarantined.
