THE three top editors of SunStar Cebu have all won the 2020 Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) in a virtual ceremony held Thursday afternoon, Nov. 26.
Michelle P. So, executive editor of SunStar Cebu and editor-in-chief of Superbalita Cebu, won Editor of the Year for Visayas. So also heads the newsroom operations of SunStar Cebu.
Nini B. Cabaero, editor-in-chief of SunStar Cebu and head of content, was Newsmaker of the Year for Visayas.
Cherry Ann T. Lim, managing editor of SunStar Cebu, won the Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print for Visayas for her two-part story on why Filipino children appeal to cyber sex predators.
The Editor of the Year Award honors the editor and his or her contributions to the industry throughout his or her service while the Newsmaker of the Year award honors a journalist and his or her “impactful body of work” throughout the given period.
Laureen Mondoñedo, SunStar Cebu’s senior editor for digital, and Neil Jean Navarro, SunStar Cebu’s former assistant content editor, also bagged the Breaking News of the Year for Digital award with their story entitled “Chinese Man with Ncov Dies in Manila.”
The GMEA 2020 had the theme “Life in the new Normal” and focused on stories and narratives that highlight the issues and realities in the new normal. These include the Covid-19 response, the impact of the quarantine on different sectors, and the difficult road to economic recovery.
SunStar Davao and SunStar Bacolod also won most of the awards in the print categories for the Mindanao and Visayas divisions.
SunStar Davao bagged six wins out of 21 nominations in the seven digital and print categories and in three special categories.
SunStar Davao’s Ace June Rell S. Perez won in the Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Digital category; Breaking News of the Year for Digital; Social Media Advocacy of the Year; News Report of the Year for Print, and Explanatory/Investigative Story or Documentary of the Year for Print.
SunStar Davao’s RJ Lumawag was also named Editor of the Year for Mindanao.
SunStar Bacolod reporter Erwin Nicavera won three awards: News Report of the Year for Print for Visayas; Investigative/Explanatory Video Story for Digital-Visayas, and Community Development Story of the Year-Visayas.
