Cuenco: Green with Beauty

In July, beauty conglomerate L’Oreal announced its 10-year program called L’Oreal for the Future with specific sustainability commitments to reduce the beauty industry’s impact on the environment. In the Philippines, Garnier leads the way with Green Beauty to encourage responsible e-commerce by using eco-friendly packaging materials. This couldn’t come at a better time when we are making so many more purchases online.

Garnier Philippines has teamed up with Shopee, Sain Bags and Econest for Green Parcel. For every purchase from Garnier’s official store on Shopee, the packaging materials used are biodegradable and recyclable, and perform the same or even better than the usual plastic and bubble wrap.

Sain Bag’s responsible alternative to plastic bags is made of cassava starch and other materials from renewable sources. The Green Bag is impressively sturdy and takes a decent amount of force to rip apart, yet is fully compostable and will completely dissolve in 90 days with no toxic residues or any damage to oceans, plants or animals.

To replace bubble wrap, Garnier partnered with EcoNest Philippines to use Geami honeycomb protective packaging. The patented 3D die-cut paper is made from virgin kraft paper with an interleaf tissue that provides our precious beauty hauls with excellent protection from the dents and damages that could occur during shipping. The honeycomb material is fully renewable and will biodegrade in two to six weeks.

Not only is Garnier cutting back on plastics in a big way with Green Parcel, but also encouraging recycling by consumers. Customers can drop off used sachets in Garnier stations in Mercury Drug branches in Metro Manila, and soon in the Visayas and Mindanao. The sachets collected will then be recycled to build emergency houses in partnership with Plastic Flamingo. Through these easily replicable practices, Garnier is not only educating consumers to make better choices, but also setting an example to other brands that it is possible for beauty to be shared and enjoyed sustainably.
