WE HAVE been told to stay at home always, if possible, since the pandemic started. We spent most of our days inside our houses for months now and this reality is expected to stretch until a vaccine is made accessible to all.

Yes, we get it, staying at home can be boring especially when done for a prolonged time. But staying at home can actually be fun and relaxing especially when you are living in an ideal home. So what exactly makes a home, ideal? Aside from the family’s relationship which should be the foundation of a happy home, these architectural and interior design elements can help you build that safe abode where you can stay for a long time.

We interviewed Davao’s sought-after interior designer Charisse Puentespina and she gladly shared her thoughts on the basic elements of an ideal home.

“Our homes have always been our source of refuge. A sanctuary where we can relax, reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones and give us a sense of well-being that prepares us for the next day,” she shared.

She added that the pandemic highlights the importance of reconsidering the spaces where we spend the majority of our time nowadays.

1. Outdoor Living Spaces

“Outdoor Living Spaces is a luxury. We should consider ourselves lucky if we would have access to the beauty of nature in close proximity. If this luxury doesn’t present itself, why not bring the outside to the interior of our homes? Be it through plants, color, texture and light. No one could deny the healing properties of nature.”

2. Quality materials

“Quality, durability, and ease of maintenance. I believe these three elements are important in considering furnishings and accessories. “

3. Location

“Location, location, and location. Whether one prefers to be in the heart of the city or one longs for the serenity of the outskirts is a matter of personal preference. But wherever one chooses to be at is a reflection of one’s personality and priorities.”

4. Airy and well-ventilated

“Once taken for granted is now one of the priorities of homeowners. A well-lighted and ventilated room does wonders to one’s wellbeing.”

5. Ergonomic

“We spend more and more time indoors nowadays. A flow that reflects the homeowners’ needs and preferences should be a priority. Space planning has never been as important, considering that our dwellings are getting smaller. Well thought off spaces that can complement our different needs and lifestyles.”
