MediTalk: Will husband’s spinal cord injury affect sex life? (Part 1)

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

I am really so low nowadays. My husband met an accident, which damaged the upper level of his spine. I wonder if this would affect our sex life. Moreover, just before his accident, we decided to have a baby. Would it still be possible this time?

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Kendrah K.

Dear Kendrah K,

I understand how you feel. But, don’t worry, there is still light at the end of the tunnel.

Men who have complete upper-level injuries of the spine do not mean that they wouldn’t have a sex life after all. A study reported in a conference I attended in Vancouver in 2002 said that men who have this problem can still have brain orgasms. This means that they can still achieve orgasm – using their thoughts, even if they don’t physically ejaculate anymore. That means the world still doesn’t end for them.

Men who have spinal cord injuries who do ejaculate may experience retrograde ejaculation – meaning that their ejaculation goes back to their body, specifically in their bladder. That is why for these men, their orgasm wouldn’t be accompanied by ejaculation. Moreover, because of sensory loss, few of these men would be able to reach and experience pre-injury-type orgasm.

I can understand that not all men who have spinal cord injuries would try to have sex. This is because of the fear that they might not just fail when they will attempt. So, they thought it would be better not to do anything at all.

Oops! We are out of space for now. Let us continue this in my next column. Until then!
