Youth groups initiate relief operation amid red-tagging

AMID the pile of requirements left for the online semester and the "rabid political vilification" from police and military forces, youth groups and individuals in Baguio City led relief drives to help the victims of the series of typhoons that ravaged the country.

Kabataan Partylist Cordillera together with Streets to Schools Cordillera and Cordilleran Youth Center worked together in convening the local Tulong Kabataan, a network for the disaster relief effort for the Kasiyana: Youth in Action for Cordillera.

Formed after Typhoon Ulysses wreaked havoc in Northern Luzon on November 13, Kasiyana convened 37 youth organizations all over Baguio City and La Trinidad.

For two weeks, Kasiyana was able to distribute family packs that included food packs and care kits for 135 families, benefitting around 500 individuals in Bokod and Itogon, Benguet.

“In just almost two weeks, we managed to raise funds amounting to more than P200,000 from two waves of call for monetary donations, coming from not only in the (Cordillera) region but also from different parts of the country. We also got in-kind donations in the form of rice and hygiene packs. Kasiyana would like to express our deep gratitude to all organizations and individuals that helped us make this effort a possibility, from the donations to providing venues and vehicles for the distribution,” Diwa Dammay of Tulong Kabataan Cordillera said.

Aside from Kasiyana, different campus organizations like UPB Baguio USC, UB SSC, Reporma-ACS, DASIG-SLU, Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth, Campus Alliance for Dedicated and Unified Action, Alliance of Concerned Students, TABAK-Baguio among many others initiated their own relief efforts for typhoon-stricken communities in the Bicol Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Cordillera Region.
